DAGUITSTAP | GENT – design & community
Een stad als ontwerplaboratorium
DOELGROEP | iedereen
How can architecture help create a city that brings its residents together? On this tour, we’ll discover Ghent as a living design laboratory, where heritage, contemporary architecture, design and public space come together.
We’ll start at Gent-Sint-Pieters station and make our way via Henry van de Velde’s iconic Boekentoren to the Wintercircus: an impressive regeneration project by Atelier Kempe Thill and aNNo; BARO Architectuur, SUMProject and OYO, where innovation, entrepreneurship and social interaction come together. De Krook, designed by RCR Arquitectes and Coussée & Goris – the new city library – also demonstrates how architecture can become a public meeting place.
At the VIERNULVIER Arts Centre (the former Vooruit), we explore how a historic building has provided a space for culture and community for generations.
We then discover the refurbished Design Museum Gent. We’ll examine the architectural extension by Carmody Groarke + ATAMA + RE-ST, the innovative use of materials – including the Gent Waste Brick by BC materials – whilst also taking a critical look at the museum’s interior design. How do you present design? How accessible is a museum? And how do the collection, scenography and architecture relate to one another?
Along the way, we’ll pause to consider the Stadshal by Robbrecht and Daem and Marie-José Van Hee: a unique public space that invites people to use it, meet there and make it their own.
A day full of architecture, design and discussions about the city as a shared space.
